FAQ about External Recruiters

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

Check this out before you hire an external recruiter or recruitment agency!

1. What is an external recruiter?

An external recruiter is an individual or a company that specializes in finding and placing candidates in job openings for other companies.

2. What do external recruiters do?

External recruiters help companies find the best candidates for their open positions, and assist job seekers in finding a job that suits their skills and career goals. A full cycle recruiter is involved in the entire recruitment process including the following steps: sourcing, screening/shortlisting, interview coordination, reference checking, offer presentation/negotiation.

3. How much do external recruiters charge?

The fees charged by external recruiters can vary greatly depending on the company, the type of job opening, and the level of difficulty in finding the right candidate. Most charge a percentage while others charge a flat fee. Of the recruiters that charge a percentage, some operate on a contingency model where the fee is due only when a placement is made and others on a retained model (typically for executive level or extremely hard to fill positions) where a portion of the fee is due at different stages of the hiring process.

4. Why use an external recruiter?

Using an external recruiter can save a company time and effort in finding the right candidate for a job opening. Recruiters have access to a wider pool of candidates, and can conduct more thorough and efficient candidate screenings than the company may be able to do on its own.

5. Do external recruiters only work for big companies?

No, external recruiters can work with companies of any size. They may have a focus on certain industries or types of positions, but they can work with any company that needs to fill a job opening.

6. How do I know if an external recruiter is legitimate?

A legitimate external recruiter should have a professional website, be transparent about their fees and services, and have good references from past clients, candidates and/or others they have worked with. A LinkedIn profile listing professional experience and their activities on the platform can be a clue of their legitimacy. Agency recruiters with a background in in-house recruitment and/or human resources are especially helpful as they would be familiar with employment legislation in the applicable jurisdiction and hiring best practices.

7. How can I work with an external recruiter?

To work with an external recruiter, you can either reach out to a recruiter directly via their website or LinkedIn profile. Be prepared to communicate openly and honestly what your expectations are so you can get the most out of the recruitment service.
