7 Things You Don't Need on Your Resume📝

Do you know how effective your resume is? Are you new to Canada and wondering how to write a resume that will get you interviews, and eventually a job?

Your resume is a showcase of your strengths, not a collection of unnecessary details. Here’s what you can safely leave out when applying for most jobs in Canada:

  1. Photos

Canadian employers don’t expect (or want) to see your picture. Hiring is based on your skills and experience, not appearance.

  1. Full Address

City and province are enough! Keep your personal data secure and reduce unnecessary info.

  1. Date of Birth or Marital Status

These details are not required and are irrelevant to your qualifications.

  1. Objective Statement

Most employers skip over these. Instead, use a strong Summary of Qualifications to highlight what makes you a fit for the role.

  1. Outdated or Irrelevant Roles

Limit your work history to the last 10-15 years unless it’s highly relevant. Older roles can be condensed or left off entirely.

  1. References Available Upon Request

This line is assumed. If employers want references, they’ll ask.

  1. Fancy Formatting or Graphics

Simple, clean formatting works best, especially if your resume will be scanned by an ATS. Stick to clear headings, bullet points, and easy-to-read fonts.

Remember: Less is more. Tailor your resume to the role you’re applying for, and focus on your skills and accomplishments that matter most. This keeps your resume lean, relevant, and impactful.
